Understand Symbolism in Dreams

Before getting into the How-to's of dream symbols and interpretation I would like to say that without the
Holy Spirit most of our interpretations will be as faulty as we are.

However, I give counsel on dream interpretation because as we meditate on our dreams, and seek the
interpretation, often the Holy Spirit will give us the interpretation to them.  In an instant, the thing will
suddenly make complete sense.  It will be obvious by the complete peace and the divine sense of the
sudden interpretation that it was imparted to us by the Holy Spirit.

God says, "Seek and ye shall find", so there is obviously a part that we have to do.   Being that this is
the case, I feel it is totally biblical to meditate on our dreams and to seek an interpretation.

First, I would like to urge you not to piecemeal a dream together through symbols.  It will not work.  Look
at the overall context of the dream.   A symbol is only able to be interpreted within the context of each
individual dream and what means one thing to one person may mean something else totally to another
person.

Very rarely do lists of dream symbols do any justice in interpreting your dreams.

What does work is praying, waiting on God, and looking at the interpretation of the symbols by asking
yourself what is going on in my life that this dream pertains to and interpreting it from there.

In my opinion, keeping an accurate log of dreams is more than a suggestion it is important.  One of the
chief ways the Lord chooses to communicate with us is through dreams and visions.  (See
Biblical
History of Dream Communication and Interpretation.)

If you have read Biblical History of Dream Communication you already know God has always used this
method to speak with His children.  Some of the many benefits of taking your dreams seriously can be
learned about by reading Biblical and Personal Benefits of Dream Interpretation.

One of the things that keeping a log of dreams achieves is that we know the outcome of scary
situations while in the midst of them.  The Lord always shows me the outcome of a thing before it
transpires and I believe he would like to give you that same comfort.  For this reason, it is so important
to take hearing from Him seriously.

Dream interpretation by Others

Should we accept the interpretation of our dreams by others?

There are people who are given the gift of interpretation of dreams:  Joseph and Daniel to name a few.
Who also, coincidentally, were prophetic dreamers themselves.  Therefore, biblically, there is a strong
precedence for the gift of dream interpretation.

I believe there still are people who are gifted with the ability to interpret dreams through the power of
the Holy Spirit because often the Lord gives me the exact interpretation of a dream.  When I have given
an interpretation by the Holy Spirit, oftentimes the person says, "WOW!  That's exactly what's going on
in my life right now!"

Therefore, from experience i know that there are people who still have the gift of interpretation of
dreams and visions but it is as the Spirit wills.  I don't have the interpretation of every dream.  If I don't
have it, I will say so.  I have no desire to give my opinion.  However, when I hear a dream and instantly
know what it means I know it was given to me by the Holy Spirit and it's always been borne out in the
accuracy of the interpretation.

Many sources will tell you not to receive a dream if your spirit doesn't instantly say, "THAT'S IT!"  when
you hear the interpretation.  I can understand the principle behind this caution.  However, I would
advise you to take care with this principle.

My caution to this rule of thumb, and I believe this caution was inspired by the Lord, is that sometimes
when people are given an interpretation to their dream by an anointed dream interpreter, they will
simply refuse to receive an interpretation to their dream because they do not want to face the truth of it.
Sometimes it is because they are afraid of what the dream suggests is coming in their life or it's
because they don't want to accept that they have to change something that they do not want to
change.  There are times when we receive an interpretation from others and we refuse to accept the
interpretation, even though it turns out to be true, because we don't want to face that truth, whatever it
is.  It is also true that sometimes we could interpret the dream accurately ourselves and still don't want
to face the truth.

Alternately, if an interpretation that has been given to you causes you to have a nagging, irritating
check in your Spirit heed the warning and discard the interpretation.   However, do not discount
submitting your dreams to others to interpret or for confirmation of your own interpretation.
